Shelter Wish List

ACCESS is looking for items to best serve the community. Below is a wish list of items we find helpful in reaching our goals. If you would like to contribute please call ahead to arrange your donation time at 515-292-0500.

If you have items we do not have the space to store, we will direct you to other organizations that assist our clients such as the Free Store in Des Moines and other second-hand stores.

*Please note: we currently have a large supply of sample-size items and are unable to accept more at this time.


Monetary Contributions

Financial donations are always welcomed and can be designated for a specific program or budget such as: shelter operations, children’s programming, food, client assistance, etc.

Get your friends or organization motivated and hold a fundraiser or supply drive for ACCESS!  Previous drives have included clothing, food, pajamas, and personal care products.

We also except gift cards:

  • Grocery - Fareway, HyVee
  • Gas - Casey’s, Kum n Go, etc.
  • Discount stores - Wal-Mart, Target, and Kmart
  • Cy-Ride Tickets
  • HIRTA Bucks


Most Needed Items

Our most needed items are listed below:

  • 1 new full-sized mattress
  • 1 new twin-sized mattress
  • ethnic hair care products
  • conditioner - full-size bottles only, please
  • all-purpose cleaner spray (like 409 or similar)
  • trash bags - 13 & 30 gallon
  • laundry detergent
  • gloves for cleaning - non-latex
  • hairbrushes
  • clothes Hangers
  • air Fresheners
  • bathroom Garbage Cans
  • toilet paper
  • paper towels



At this time, ACCESS is able to accept a limited amount of seasonal items. We only except seasonal clothing due to storage constraints, we suggest you donate out-of-season items to Goodwill or the Salvation Army.

Our needed clothing items are listed below:

  • socks (new)
  • underwear
  • bras (new)
  • slippers
  • flip flops
  • robes
  • pajamas



ACCESS does except unopened, unexpired food! If you would like to bake a holiday dish or dessert for the shelter, please call ahead.

Some items we are looking for are listed below:

  • (Non-perishable) Coffee and filters, juice, drink mix, canola/vegetable oil, pancake mix, syrup, tortillas, crackers, olive oil, grits,  cereal, canned fruits, vegetables, canned meat such as tuna in water and chicken, chicken helper, tuna helper, canned pasta (Spaghetti Os, ravioli, etc.), pasta sauce, tea, condiments.
  • (Perishable) Meat, poultry, fish, frozen foods, fresh fruit, TV dinners, or vegetables may be donated by contacting the shelter staff at 515-292-9258 or



ACCESS services children and teens.

Some items we are looking for are listed below:

  • baby wipes
  • baby monitors
  • teen games
  • teen clothing
  • teen deodorant
  • teen body splash
  • Play Dough
  • children's cough/cold meds
  • diapers: 3, 4, 5, and pull-ups



ACCESS's cell phone fundraiser program is sponsored by Shelter Alliance, a program of cell phone recycling company GRC Wireless Recycling. Through Shelter Alliance, nonprofit organizations raise funds through the collection & recycling of used cell phones, and businesses & consumers donate & recycle cell phones to benefit nonprofit participants. Cell phones can be donated to ACCESS by calling our business number: 515-292-0500.

Besides cell phones, some appliances are useful to us too. See below:

  • small refrigerators - in excellent working condition
  • lightbulbs - standard size bulb bases, 40-60 watt
  • lamps
