The Event: On May 26, 2018, FARST Foundation, Full Tilt Riders MC Central Iowa, & Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity (Rho Eta Sigma chapter) will be hosting “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes” & “White Ribbon Campaign” downtown Marshalltown (Courthouse Square). Proceeds from sponsored walkers in the event will benefit ACCESS (Assault Care Center Extending Shelter & Support).
The walk features male community members and leaders walking in high heeled shoes in order to raise awareness and educate the community on the issue of sexual violence. The walk gives men the opportunity to publicly take a stand on the issues of violence against women and children; it shows that men are willing to stand together with women in making the world a safer place for all men, women and children. Educators, students, law enforcement officers, elected and appointed officials, motorcyclists and others are expected to participate in our annual walk!
There is an old saying: "You can't really understand another person's experience until you've walked a mile in their shoes." Walk a Mile in Her Shoes® asks men to literally walk one mile in women's high-heeled shoes. It's not easy walking in these shoes, but it's fun and it gets the community to talk about something that's really difficult to talk about.
"Walk a Mile in Her Shoes" provides several opportunities to get people talking. For preventive education, it helps men better understand and appreciate women's experiences, thus changing perspectives, helping improve gender relationships and decreasing the potential for violence. For healing, it informs the community that services are available for recovery. It demonstrates that men are willing and able to be courageous partners with women in making the world a safer place.
